Sign: Leo (July 22-August 22)

Symbol: the lion

In Greek mythology: Another of the twelve labors assigned to the demi-god Hercules in lieu of atonement for the murder of his family (the back story is pretty intense and it involves Hera driving the product of her husband’s infidelity insane out of anger and frustration) was to slay the Nemean Lion. It’s pelt was impervious to Hercules’ arrows, but he did manage to take it down by strangling it with his bare hands. To complete the labor, he needed to bring back the beast’s pelt, which seemed downright impenetrable. He was assisted by the goddess Athena who suggested using the lion’s own claw to skin it. Hera, seeing that Hercules still lived, was not happy, but honored the lion’s efforts by placing its image among the stars.
