Mars in Virgo: July 29 – September 15

♪♪ Mars in Virgo soundtrack: Grace by Jeff Buckley ♪♪

Mars represents willpower, ambition, passion, self-assertion, physical energy, the urge to survive, and the wildness that exists within all human beings. He represents men, sons, brothers, martyrs, smiths, surgeons, anything having to do with fire or blades, tempestuous weather, and red clouds. The ancient Greeks knew him as Ares, god of war. His day is Tuesday, his metal is iron, and his color is red as the fire from which his sword is forged. Where Mars is in a birth chart will tell us how we get what we want and do what we do.

Virgo is an earthy, changeable, feminine sign ruled by the planet Mercury. Virgo is where  we prepare as best we can for a coming season that we cannot predict. It is about taking stock of what we have created and organizing it in a way that will be most useful. Mercury is a flighty planet. We see depictions of Hermes in winged shoes. He is the messenger god, known for speed and the ability to change course at a moment’s notice. The signs under his rule are places of great intelligence, wit, and mental agility. In Virgo, we often find those qualities manifesting through detailed work performed by the physical body. This sign is top notch when it comes to taking things apart and putting them back together in a more efficient manner.

The partnership of Mars and Mercury can be incendiary. The former takes pleasure in sporting competitions, battles, and being in charge while the latter enjoys strategy, logic, and has no allegiance. When the god of war and willpower enters the temple of Virgo, this part of the chart is provided with ample motivation… and in return, Martian activities are refined, directed, and subject to change.

When Mars is in Virgo, we can see things like:

  • Sharp or direct communication, debates
  • Cutting away of things, ideas, people, etc. that will not serve us in the coming period of time
  • Strategic and organized use of one’s physical energy
  • Taking action in defense of women (all), feminism
  • Single-minded preservation of one’s body and hard-won resources
  • Men engaged in detail-oriented handiwork
  • Anger signaling underlying anxieties
  • Fixing, mending, preparing things with fire or blades
  • Conflicts with Sun, Moon, or rising Virgoans
  • Abdominal/intestinal afflictions

These are overarching themes. If you know what your rising sign is, you can determine what house Virgo rules in your chart. This will tell you what specific areas of your life are being affected by this transit.
