Leo New Moon

This Sunday’s new moon in Leo is a very special one, as it lands on the peak date of the Lion’s Gate portal. Lion’s Gate is a metaphysical and astronomical phenomenon which occurs when the Earth is aligned with Sirius, the brightest star we can see, between July 28 and August 12 every year. This period of time is said to herald accelerated spiritual growth. A level up, if you will. In numerology, the number 8 represents infinity and all that is. On the 8th day of the 8th month, this subtle energetic doorway opens itself wide, inviting those who are ready to walk through. This is not even close to the only dynamic we are working with right now, but it sets the mood and the theme for this moon cycle quite nicely.

The sign of the lion is bold, courageous, and noble, strong-willed, strong-hearted, and committed to conducting itself honorably. It is passionate, creative, playful, and desires success, adventure, and freedom. There is a wildness and a fierceness in this sign that can be equally intimidating and attractive. Like the Strength card of the Tarot, Leo has much to do with how we allow our inner beast to express itself while also not letting our outer human stifle our essential  nature. With the new moon here, we are being made aware of the parts of ourselves that are the lion or lioness. This is where we see our own potential and invest in ourselves. We become our own light in the darkness, our own torch in the Indiana Jones catacombs of life. Leo is the fixed fire sign of the zodiac, the sustained burn. It’s no wonder that it rules the height of summer when we think about how much of the earth is currently being scorched by rampant wildfires. It’s not coincidental to me that most wildland firefighters I’ve met have Sun or rising in Leo (or Aries, where the Sun is exalted and almost as powerful as its home sign). As the Sun and Moon are just releasing from their squares with Uranus, we are given an opportunity. Uranus in taurus is about digging up faulty, damaged foundations that can no longer support what needs to grow. We are coming to hard realizations every day about what the world we live in can and cannot provide for us and the toll that previous generations’ unwillingness to provide for it has taken. We’re being told that it’s time to switch gears if there are to be any usable resources for our children. This new moon is really a turning point– the point at which we shift from continuously being confronted by old patterns and needing to change the subsequent behaviours that are so deeply ingrained in us because of past life, ancestral, womb, childhood, etc. trauma to instating new, healthy systems, practices, and rituals. Building upon the lessons of Leo, we are taking accountability for how we came to be in this place and rising to meet the challenge of it with honor, strength, and grace. This is when we choose to take actions that we are proud of. A few things we may see are:

  • The desire to break free of material trappings in pursuit of adventure and personal creative expression
  • Impatience, dissatisfaction with the reality that everything takes time, restlessness
  • Inspiration to build or rebuild from the ashes of what has burned
  • Conscious leadership, sense of purpose
  • Inflamed passions, overexcitement, attention issues, nervousness, impulsiveness
  • Feelings of vitality and emotional weights being lifted

As the Moon leaves the Sun’s side, Mercury (also in Leo) moves into an opposition with Jupiter retrograde in Aquarius. These two planets are considered to be archetypal opposites… and they are opposing one another. I see a very interesting conversation between the logical, rational and the spiritual, philosophical parts of ourselves and/or the collective. What doubts we have about our ability to create a better and brighter future are about to be called out. The messenger god is pumped up on lion juice and ready to blow up Jupiter’s wobbly fantasies, but have no fear. This is actually to our benefit. Retrograde journeys are about taking a closer look, going back over things, making edits, coming to deeper understandings, and having very important realizations. With Jupiter in Aquarius, we may have been putting our mind power and energetic currency toward certain social engagements, community efforts, and collective endeavors that are ready to be rerouted. Since this transit begins right on the heels of the new moon, we will feel its influence as an important part of the next few weeks. Some things we may experience with this transit are:

  • Being overly optimistic, over-promising and under-selling
  • Deals being made in a harmonious fashion
  • Being too bold in one’s speech, speaking in a loud voice
  • Thinking big thoughts and asking big questions (higher mind)
  • Advertisements
  • Jovial exchanges, jokes, finding the humour or making it
  • Bragging
  • Being put on the spot or putting someone on the spot

This moon is it! The moment we’ve been waiting for! It’s time to step into ourselves and step up to the truth that is all around us. It’s time to take no action for self or other that is without integrity. It’s time to step through the doorway, to level up, to become better than we ever have been before. Be excellent to yourselves and one another.
