For your listening pleasure: Cancer New Moon PLaylist
The Sun and Moon are the quintessential celestial representatives of Yin and Yang. The OG. Essentially what all other astrological symbolism is based off of. On Friday, July 9 at 9:15pm eastern, they are getting together in the sign of Cancer, which is known as the gateway of life. There’s something very special about new moons that happen in the sign of the crab. Every Sun-Moon conjunction is a new beginning, but the one we get around this time of year is particularly procreative.
Cancer is a water sign, emotive, intuitive, fluid. It is also cardinal/initiating, as all signs that begin new seasons are. The Moon is the celestial queen and this is her temple. She is at home here. Cancer is where her powers are at their strongest. When we talk about the Moon we are talking about women, mothers, children, families, our homes, our own childhoods, community, memories, the physical body, the mind, our instincts… Cancer encompasses much of the same. This is a tender sign, known for being nurturing and caring. You can often find folks with heavy Cancerian influence at work in nursing homes, pre-k classrooms, and kitchens. These individuals are sweet, loving, and supportive, highly sensitive, protective, and at times extremely reactionary. Hard shell, soft belly, sharp claws.
When a planet is in its own temple, it is telling us that this is where we are meant to worship right now. When we are able to accept our own experience, be present with it, honor and respect it, we lose nothing, but gain everything. Living on the material plane is not easy, especially because we humans are so very delicate. That is how we are designed. We have so much strength, power and resilience, but we are not immune to the hardships and difficulties of life on planet Earth. Sometimes the emotional noise around us can be deafening, which is why it is important to use our shells wisely… better that than getting to the point where claws come out.
The other thing that I want to mention here is the Venus-Mars conjunction that I talked about last week since it is happening in Leo (ruled by the Sun) while the Sun and Moon are engaged in their monthly birthing ritual. It’s interesting because, like the celestial lights, Venus and Mars also represent Yin and Yang. I’d say this is the major theme of 2021’s Cancer new moon. It’s the balance of doing and allowing which is really how creation of anything works. This can also be like an individuality vs. togetherness vibe. It feels spirited, impassioned, expressive, sexual, willful, desiring fun, self-gratification, and social venues, but it may also feel a bit adversarial (think the battle of the sexes). Maybe even a bit of ego here. There is a great opportunity to find harmony and stability betwixt our inner opposites with this alignment. Giving ourselves permission to be something other (or more) than what the outside world tells us we are meant to be based on the material circumstances we find ourselves in frees the heart. We need that if we are ever to be present with those we love, see them with clarity, and experience their true radiance without our unresolved stuff getting in the way.
**Something important that we (people inhabiting traditionally recognized as female bodies and those that care about our well-being) need to be aware of with Venus in a fire sign is heat related conditions concerning the “female” reproductive system; pelvic infections, inflammation, hot flashes, and the like.**
Here’s an exercise for those times when you’re feeling overwhelmed, overheated, and like everything is just too much: Imagine that you are a crab-sized version of yourself. You’re on a beach. As the foamy water gathers itself into the sea, you walk out toward it with all of the feels you’re feeling. When the next wave rises, you stand and wait. The curl of briney water washes over you, cleansing your wounds, pulling out whatever is causing your pain. Another wave rises, and again, you wait. After it breaks, it draws back across your body, cooling tempers, soothing and calming aggravations, and healing hurts. Allow yourself to be healed and nurtured by the ocean for as long as you need.
Let this moon be the midwife that welcomes all parts of you into the world. Create yourself anew with tenderness and understanding. Experience the joy of coming fully into this moment… And if things get too hot, remember that the water medicine is always here to cool you. These energies can present themselves so differently from one individual to the next. Please reach out if you would like to find out how they are working for you.
